World Alzheimer’s Month: The Importance of Compassionate Memory Care in Calgary

World Alzheimer’s Month The Importance of Compassionate Memory Care in Calgary

Every year, World Alzheimer’s Day is observed on September 21st. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and encouraging support for those impacted.
For families, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the need for specialized care services for loved ones living with dementia. At Trico LivingWell, we understand the unique challenges that Alzheimer’s disease brings to both individuals and their families. Our Memory Care service in Calgary are designed to provide compassionate, tailored care that addresses the physical needs of our residents and empowers them to experience security, purpose, achievement and significance.

Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. It affects memory, thinking, and behaviour, with symptoms progressing over time that can alter the ability to live independently. In its early stages, individuals may experience mild memory loss, but as the disease advances, they may require more specialized care to ensure safety, comfort, and dignity.

That’s why it’s essential to recognize the importance of professional dementia care services that address medical needs and focus on the individual’s emotional and social well-being.

Raising Awareness During World Alzheimer’s Month

World Alzheimer’s Month, observed throughout September, is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness, challenging the stigma surrounding dementia, and supporting those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

At Trico LivingWell, we are proud to be part of this movement, emphasizing the importance of understanding, compassion, and proactive care. During this month, we encourage families, caregivers, and the broader community to engage in discussions about dementia care and to learn more about the impact Alzheimer’s has on individuals and their loved ones. Our commitment has always been to champion the life and dignity of our residents, and we’ve taken action this year by partnering with Alzheimer Calgary as the Presenting Sponsor of the 2024 Alzheimer Walk & Run.

By fostering awareness and supporting Alzheimer Calgary, we can work together to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for those living with Alzheimer’s.

The Importance of Specialized Memory Care

Memory care at Trico LivingWell is built on the foundation of our social model of care services, taking person-centred care to the relationship level. We recognize that for
residents to be happy and fulfilled, we need to understand their past and present relationships with the individuals that may play a role in influencing their holistic
wellness. This evidence-based, relationship-centred care approach informs and shifts our perceptions of what is meaningful, important and impactful in our care services.

Memory care involves creating a safe, structured environment designed to reduce stress for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. At Trico LivingWell, we are committed to providing personalized dementia care in Calgary, where residents’ needs, interests, skills and strengths are supported through purposeful programming and wellness living within small, intimate groups.

Our Memory Care services are centred around empathy, dignity, and respect, ensuring that each resident feels valued and understood. We know that Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect memory but can alter a person’s behaviour and ability to communicate. That’s why our team of caregivers at Trico LivingWell are trained to offer more than just clinical support—they provide emotional reassurance and understand the importance of patience and compassion.

Supporting Alzheimer’s Awareness and Specialized Memory Care at Trico LivingWell

All proceeds from registration will go towards supporting local families impacted by dementia through the work of Alzheimer Calgary. Learn how to join our team or donate.
In addition, we’re hosting a variety of fun fundraising opportunities that will further go towards supporting Alzheimer Calgary.  Learn how to get involved in these initiatives.
